The past perfect continuous tense
(also known as the past perfect progressive tense) shows that an act that happening
in the past continual up till another time in the past. The past perfect
continuous tense is built using had been + the verb’s
OR
Past Perfect Continuous Tense represents an continuing act that happening
and continual for some time in the past. To specify time orientation “for” and
“since” are used and it defines when the act happening and how long it continual
in the past.

He had been understanding

They had
