A fun thanks to teaching vocabulary in travel English classes
Trying to return up with a fun thanks to introduce new vocabulary in Travel English courses? Here's what you'll do to pick and present new words to students. I will be able to mention what to try to and briefly describe what I did in my class:
1. DO a fast INTERNET SEARCH ON THE PLACE WHERE YOUR STUDENT IS getting to GO
You should search for places, tourist attractions, food, drinks and make a vocabulary list... I really like using TripAdvisor for that. what's really wonderful about the web is that you simply don't really need to possess been to or maybe know much about the place where your student is going; a fast search will turn tons of interesting results provided by peopleI prepared a category I called "Fun things to do". I even have never been to Southeast Asia and know little or no about it, but here's the vocabulary list I came up with:
- shrine
- full-of-the-moon party
- tourist trap
- off the beaten track
- coast
- beach town
- snorkeling
- palace
- street food
- bonfire
2. FIND PHOTOS of those THINGS ON the web.
You may print them or add all to a special slide on a PowerPoint or board presentation. Don't let your students see the words or the photographs. These are going to be used for a dictation which can aim at preparing students to concentrate on these words in conversations. After all, when while on holiday we hear names of places, foods, attractions and events before we actually see them and without actually being ahead of them. A dictation will prepare your students to spot these words once they hear them. And since you're picking words that appear on top searches, it's very likely they're going to hear people mention it.My class: I compiled the terms on a google doc and had them able to use it on a presentation.
3. DICTATION TIME, YAY!
Dictate the words/phrases and have your students write them down on a bit of paper. If it is a phrase you would possibly want to point out them what percentage words you're pronouncing. It's completely ok and acceptable they misspell words or haven't any clue what you're saying. My class: I had her number a bit of paper and dictated words. For the short phrases I let her know the number of words and also showed it with my fingers.
4. PROVIDE CLARIFICATION AT FEEDBACK.
Have your student repeat word by word.Pause after each repetition to try to three things: show the corresponding picture, the right spelling/pronunciation and have them ask an issue associated with that thing/place/event.
At now your student should be confident about having understood a number of the words, and completely lost with others. this is often an excellent opportunity for you to figure on pronunciation, spelling, and meaning, as they're going to have probably spelled the words the way it sounded to them (which means closer to how they sound in their first language), in order that they might realize they heard it all wrong. great point they need you, right?
My class: I had my student repeat all of the words/chunks to me the way they sounded to her, and when she did that I showed her the corresponding picture and provided the right spelling. Here's a funny thing: with the word palace she actually heard me say tellis, which suggests we both needed a moment to understand what the heck that was.
The procedure was: first she said the word. Then I showed the image and wrote the right spelling. and eventually I asked her to consider a few questions she would ask that thing/place/event, so we moved on to revising question formation in English. She may be a false beginner so it didn't take her long to return up with great ideas of her own, but you'll also add the words and have them reorder the terms to make questions. you'll also mention likes and dislikes, teach verbs they will use in these places, show webpages and tours...
